Charlotte Hatherley |
The only
female member of Irish band, Ash, Charlotte Hatherley joined the band
in 1997, and plays guitar and backing vocals. Charlotte
worked as a rock guitarist since the age of 15, playing gigs around clubs in
with London punk-band Nightnurse, until the manager of Ash spotted her talent at
one of her gigs. By this time Charlotte was 18. Ash had decided they needed
another guitarist to boost their sound, and after auditioning many male
guitarists, they eventually snapped her up. The NME were surprised to hear
that Ash’s newest member was
female, and fans were divided. Nevertheless, she spent just 2 weeks in
rehearsal, and went straight on to play her first gig with Ash at V97 in Reading. |
"The
way I write is more abstract," she says. Leaning forward into her
explanation, "Tim's a gifted pop writer and I've learned loads from
being around him and playing with him." But she declares firmly,
"My own song writing style is very different from Ash." Though
her words are delivered with charm and diplomacy, you sense that Charlotte,
like all true musicians, is longing to get into the studio and record her own
stuff. Kerrang |
Since
then, Ash have had major success,
and despite a massive busy schedule, Charlotte has written a considerable
amount of Ash’s
material, including song’s of her own for the solo career soon to be
launched. |
